TYPES OF SENTENCES
We use different types of sentences for
different purposes, and when we categorize sentences based on their purpose, we
get four types of sentences: Statements, Questions, exclamations and commands.
1. Statement (Declarative or assertive sentence)
2. Question (interrogative sentence?)
3. Exclamation (Exclamatory sentence!)
4. Command (Imperative sentence)
1. Statement (Declarative or Assertive)
These are
most common type of sentence. We use them to make statements.
E.g.:
- The butter was in the cupboard yesterday.
- This is my favorite movie.
- He lived here long ago.
2. Question/Interrogative Sentence
When we
want to ask questions, we use interrogative sentences. These types of sentences
often have an auxiliary verb before the subject.
E.g.:
- Where is the butter?
- Where did he live?
- What is your favorite movie?
3. Exclamation/Exclamatory Sentence
Sometimes
we want to express our emotions.
Yes !
An
exclamatory sentence makes a statement with emotion. It ends with an
exclamation mark.
E.g.:
- This is awesome car!
- I love this movie!
4. Command/Imperative Sentence
Imperative sentences involve requests, suggestions, advice, or commands. Imperative
sentences often appear to be missing subjects and may use a verb to begin the
sentence as a result. In fact, the subject is the person listening, the
audience.
E.g.:
- Show me the butter.
- Play the movie.
